- Hot Yoga Teacher
- Super Aunt
What is your backstory (how did you get to where you are today)?
After 20+ years of playing competitive soccer, ahandfulof marathons, and four ankle surgeries, I realized that I needed to stop abusing my joints and began the search for a healthier, less impactful alternative that was equally intense and challenging. I stumbled into my first Bikram yoga classand was hooked. My body felt better. Every single class challenged me both physically and mentally. I was less stressed and anxious. Ifelt happier and lighter. I was smiling more.
At about the same time that I knew I would be practicing Bikram yoga for the rest of my life, I realized that I wanted todo something different with my professional life. I had spent eight years working as a Management Consultantfor one of the Big Four Accounting and Consulting firms. I was exhausted. I was sick oftraveling for work and living out of hotels. Wearing business suits made my skin crawl. I started taking classes to become a nurse; I looked into the possibility of going to business school. The only thing that felt 100% right was going to Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. I wanted to be true to myself and make a change to something that I knew really interestedme and Iwas passionate about. I realized that I would be able to better serve and help others if I first made myself happy. I thought that becoming a yoga teacher would help with that. It did. More than I had ever imagined.
I graduated from TeacherTraining in 2011 andhave taught yoga ever since. My home base is Chicago, Illinois where Iam so fortunate toteach the yoga that I loveand also workon other special projects and initiativesfor the amazing 105F Hot Yoga Chicago studios. Once in a blue moon, I stillput on that itchy business suit anddo a little teeny bit of business consulting work on the side. I havemet so many incredible and inspiring people and have had so many amazing adventures since making this huge career change. For example, in 2014, I took advantage of the unique experiences afforded as a Bikram Yoga Teacher and spent the year traveling and teaching through Australia and Asia!
What motivates you?
New adventures and experiences, learning new things and being happy! Happiness = success. And, happiness to me is having a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy spirit. When those three things are in alignment, I am able to be a better version of myself and give more to others.
What is your super power?
I have nosuperpower! Ijust work really hard at whatever it is I do and I try to be super flexible (yoga pun intended).
I used to get upset or stressed if something didn't work out exactly according to my plan. I do think it is important to set goals and have a plan in mind, but I've learned that if something doesn't work out exactly according to plan thenit usually isfor a reason. I have found that the combination ofhard work and flexibility allows for new and exciting opportunities to arise.
How do you protect (and give back to) your community?
Though I'm always learning how to be a better and more effective teacher, Iam fortunate tohavedeveloped askill where I have the ability to help share the gift of health with others. Bikram Yoga is quite challenging yet it is a beginner's class and series. It is available and accessible to all. Helping peopleof all different ages, shapes, sizes who have different bodies, injuries, and health issues become stronger, more flexible, more fit, less stressed, and happier is what I loveto do and one of the ways I help to"protect" my community.
Who is your supporting cast of characters that help you to be so darn crush worthy?
My family...especially my Mom and Dad. From an early age, my parents stressed the importance of working hard, staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and having fun in life. I always made (and will continue to make) my career decisions with those bits in mind. In previous jobs, the focus was always on the first bit, working hard…..to earn a living. I feel fortunate to now to have a career where there is a fairly equal balance between all three.
Who do you have a crush on?
Probably not exactly what you are looking for when you asked this question but....Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Gosling, Matthew McConaughey (pre-cheesy Lincoln car commercials), David Beckham, Javier Bardem. Should I go on?
